How to Choose the Best Home EV Charger
With electric vehicle ownership growing rapidly across Bristol, a home EV charger has become one of the most practical upgrades you can make to your property. Charging at home is significantly cheaper and more convenient than relying on public chargers — and having a dedicated unit installed is simpler than most people expect.
Types of Home EV Charger
There are two main categories of EV charger for domestic use:
Slow Chargers (3.6kW)
These use a standard 13A socket or a basic dedicated unit. Charging a typical EV from empty to full takes around 12-14 hours. While slow, they are the cheapest option and can be sufficient if you only drive short distances and can charge overnight.
Fast Chargers (7kW)
The most popular choice for home installations. A 7kW charger will fully charge most electric vehicles in 4-8 hours, making overnight charging comfortable for virtually all daily driving patterns. This is the type we install most frequently across Bristol.
Some newer units offer 7.4kW output and smart features including app control, scheduled charging, energy tariff optimisation, and solar panel integration.
How Much Does an EV Charger Installation Cost?
The total cost depends on the charger brand and features you choose, the complexity of the installation, and the condition of your existing electrical system. Costs can increase if your consumer unit needs upgrading, if a longer cable run is required, or if additional earthing work is needed.

Installation Requirements
Before an EV charger can be installed, your electrician will check several things:
- Consumer unit capacity — Your fuse board must have a spare way and sufficient capacity to support the additional load. If your consumer unit is older or fully loaded, an upgrade may be required.
- Earthing and bonding — The earthing system must meet current regulations. Properties with older TT or TN-C-S earthing arrangements may need additional work.
- Cable run — The distance between your consumer unit and the charger location affects the cable size needed and the overall cost.
- Mounting location — The charger is typically mounted on an external wall near your parking space. It must be accessible but also protected from potential vehicle impact.
Do I Need Planning Permission?
In most cases, installing a domestic EV charger in Bristol is covered by permitted development rights, so planning permission is not required. However, if your property is listed or in a conservation area — which applies to parts of Clifton, Cotham, and the city centre — you should check with Bristol City Council before proceeding.
Smart Charger Regulations
Since June 2022, all new home charger installations in England must be smart chargers. This means the unit must be capable of connecting to the internet and responding to signals to manage charging times. In practice, all modern chargers from major manufacturers meet these requirements.
